Best Gaming Keyboard Buying Guide

Want to know the ins and outs of a high-quality gaming keyboard? Check out the rest of our buying guide below!

What Is a Gaming Keyboard?

A gaming keyboard is an adapted or advanced keyboard that has been designed specifically to help enhance a user’s gaming experience. This is achieved through several features that are not often seen in a standard keyboard. They can be anything from programmable keys and being set up in a more physically convenient game playing.

Things to Consider When Buying a Gaming Keyboard

If none of our top 7 gaming keyboards appeal to you, you may wish to do some research of your own to find your ideal gaming keyboard. Continue reading to see the specs you will want to consider and the features you should look for.

Keyboard size

A keyboard with 104 (or 105) keys is considered a “full size” keyboard. They include the full alphanumeric section, dedicated function keys, a number pad, and a set of directional cursor keys. Some users consider full-size keyboards too large as they have the widest style. Alternatively, you can opt for a “tenkeyless” size keyboard. This type of keyboard does not have the numbered keypad that comes with most other keyboards. This makes the product smaller, saving you desk space. However, if the number pad is important to you, a full-size keyboard is still a valid option.

Mechanical vs. membrane

The majority of standard keyboards currently on the market use “membrane” technology under their keys. Membrane-based keyboards have a layer of silicone or rubber that acts as both the electrical contact and the spring. They look thinner than mechanical keyboards and are also cheaper. Some gamers find they need the distinct click that a membrane keyboard lacks but a mechanical keyboard possesses. This is because, from a tactile point of view, no “click” makes it difficult to tell if you’ve pressed the key fully. In a mechanical keyboard, there is a mechanical switch under each key. These switches have springs, housings, and stems and provide a click that you can easily hear and feel. Mechanical key switches come in three types with varying degrees of spring resistance and click strength. Mechanical keyboards are much tougher than standard keyboards. Most mechanical keys can withstand 40-50 million clicks before needing to be replaced. If you are an avid gamer, we recommend buying a mechanical keyboard over a membrane keyboard.

Customization and macro buttons

Several gaming keyboards come with a devoted set of buttons that can be organized to execute a pre-defined combination of actions (in-game macros). Some fighting games like Mortal Kombat require you to press several buttons in a sequence to make your fighter do a specific special move. Using buttons dedicated to in-game macros, you could effectively perform a 6-button move with the push of one button.

Key rollover and anti-ghosting

A keyboard with key rollover means the keyboard itself registers every keypress, even if you press many buttons simultaneously. “N-key rollover” is a measurement that tells you how many keys your keyboard can register at once. For example, a 6-key rollover allows you to press 6 keys at once with the successful input of all 6 keys. The higher the “n” number, the more workable the gaming keyboard will be. Not all gaming keyboards contain a key rollover feature, so you need to look specifically if it appeals to you. Sometimes, when you press keys simultaneously on a keyboard or simply type quickly, a keyboard can register an unpressed adjacent key. This phenomenon is known as “ghosting.” Look for a gaming keyboard with anti-ghosting features to prevent this occurrence from ruining a game.

Backlit illumination

Adjustable keyboard backlights are not just for show! Although they look cool, they can be a useful tool during gameplay. You can customize your keyboard to illuminate certain areas of your keyboard or even individual keys. This feature allows you to move your hands easily to the keys you need without the need to look away from your screen. Before muscle memory kicks in, backlights are a useful tool for any gamer.

Gaming Keyboard Price Range

You can buy a basic gaming keyboard for about $50. The most you can expect to pay for an exceptional gaming keyboard is around $700. Check the price against customer reviews to see if you are getting a good value for the money.

How We Chose the Best Gaming Keyboards

We have done extensive research into what works best for gamers to bring you the best gaming keyboards. There are several features we looked for that increase a player’s gaming experience. We compared the presence of these features with price, durability, and customer reviews.

People Also Asked

Can you use a gaming keyboard for regular use?

You can use a gaming keyboard for regular use. Although a gaming keyboard has many added features, it has very few features taken away from it. One noticeable one is a gaming keyboard with fewer keys. Sometimes a “tenkeyless” keyboard will lose its dedicated number pad in exchange for a smaller size. However, this does not mean you won’t have access to other number keys on the keyboard.

Why are most gaming keyboards wired?

Most gaming keyboards are wired because they offer a faster response time than wireless keyboards, and they don’t need to be charged. Wired keyboards are also cheaper than wireless keyboards.

Can you add a keyboard to a laptop?

Yes, you can add a keyboard to a laptop by plugging it into a USB or keyboard port. Connecting another keyboard will not disable the keys on your laptop. You can use both the external and internal keyboard at the same time.
