Best Bird Watching Scopes Buyer’s Guide

One of the best ways to get a closer look at birds in their natural habitat is by simply getting a powerful scope. This buyer’s guide should cover the basics you need to learn when using spotting scopes.

What Are Bird Watching Scopes

Bird watching scopes are specialized spotting scopes designed to let the user observe things from a distance. Unlike telescopes designed for viewing the night sky, these spotting scopes are built in such a way that you can peer through them at an angle while being able to see what’s right in front of you. The design makes it perfect for observing wildlife, particularly birds, hence the term “bird watching scope”.

Why Do You Need a Bird Watching Scope

You’ll be surprised by how useful bird-watching scopes can be.

They take your bird watching to the next level

Bird watching is a very simple hobby, but with the right tools and trinkets, you can make it a lot more interesting. Birdwatchers commonly take photos and videos of the birds and flocks that they come across. However, doing so can be pretty difficult when you’re trying to capture footage of particularly shy birds or birds that move around a lot.

So, instead of moving around all the time, a more efficient way to get a good shot is by simply using a spotting scope. Once you find a good vantage point, you can set up all your tools and stay in the same area for hours while you take photos and videos.

Do note, however, that to be able to take video and photos with a bird-watching scope, you’ll need to have an adapter to mount your camera. The shape and design of the adapter can vary, and there are adapters for smartphone cameras and DSLR cameras, so be sure you’re getting the right type before you go bird-watching.

Even if you don’t take videos and photos, having a bird-watching scope can really come in handy when you simply just want to get a good look at the birds. Not everybody has perfect vision, and even if you do have great eyesight, there’s a limit to how far you can see. With a spotting scope, you can see birds do a lot of the more intricate things, such as preening, feeding, and so on.

You can use them for other purposes

Bird watching scopes are named as such because they’re mainly used for bird watching, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to just that one type of activity. Spotting scopes can have plenty of applications in hobbies and activities that require good vision. For example, the common use of spotting scopes is as a tool for hunting. If you’re looking for a target, a spotting scope will allow you to scour the area for animals that otherwise blend in quite well with their natural surroundings.

If you’re not a hunter, you can still use the spotting scope for stargazing. Sure, it may not be as powerful or as clear as an astronomical telescope, but you’ll still get a far better view than you normally would with your naked eye. This activity can be a great change of pace after viewing birds for so long. A universe is a beautiful place, and if you like watching birds fly, there’s a good chance that astronomy is something that’ll interest you, too.

Things to Consider When Buying a Bird-Watching Scope

Magnification

As with all telescopes and magnifiers, you’ll need to consider the magnification of your bird watching or spotting scope first and foremost. Magnification refers to how zoomed in an image will appear through the telescope lens. This can range anywhere between 1x to 100x or more, and it can be difficult to really explain how each magnification tier feels, as you’ll need to try it out yourself to really get a feel for it.

For bird-watching purposes, you should be fine with at least 10x magnification. This is on the much lower end of spotting scope magnification, but it’s still good enough to get a decent view of birds from afar. At 10x magnification, you will need to get a little close to the birds to get a shot that’s good enough for photos or video.

You’ll want much higher magnification, however, if you want to get footage from birds situated further away from your vantage point. For example, if you’re in a valley and you want to take photos of a family of birds nesting on the other side, 10x probably won’t cut it. So for those of you who really are serious about bird watching, we recommend a magnification of at least 20x to 50x.

At this range, you should be able to get a good view of birds in almost all scenarios.

Accessories

Aside from the spotting scope itself, there are a few other trinkets you may want to get if you want to improve your bird-watching experience. Arguably the most important accessory is the tripod – in fact, some wouldn’t even consider the tripod to be an accessory at all, and instead think of it as a necessary part of any true spotting scope set. Tripods allow you to position the scope properly without having to hold it which can be useful if you’re trying to take stable videos and photos on uneven terrain or over longer periods.

Then, there are the adapters. Adapters are necessary for taking footage with spotting scopes, and there are adapters for both smartphones and cameras. If you already have a camera, then getting the latter will probably be better for great photo and video quality, but smartphone cameras have improved quite a bit over the years, so you should be able to use them with no issues at all.

There are also other accessories such as carrying bags. These accessories don’t really impact your bird-watching activities, but they can make bird-watching a little more convenient and efficient.

Places to Use a Bird Watching or Spotting Scope

There are countless incredible places to set up and use a bird-watching scope, and the best spots are likely a lot closer than you might think. Some may point to the Everglades, the mountainous regions of Peru, and even some global major cities as the only real places to go bird watching, but in all likelihood, you can have a great time birding without even leaving your neighborhood.

With a novice spotting scope and just average magnification, you’ll be able to set up in your backyard and scout around for birds nesting or traveling through your immediate area. Depending on your geographical location and the time of year, you’ll be able to spot some pretty incredible birds and their daily activities from an angle you’ve never encountered before. If there is a park with trees in your local area, setting up your bird watching scope and camera in a well-lit and safe location can bring you hours of entertainment as you search for birds and capture great moments with your camera to share with others.

Imagine the reactions of your friends and family when you showcase the incredible bird photos you’ve taken without even leaving the immediate area! The global birding community is a strong and growing one and is always ready to welcome new members no matter their skill and investment level. With your very own spotting scope, you can hit the ground running in a brand new community no matter where you are in the world.
