If all you need sound for on your desktop is an incoming beep alert for receiving a new message, there really is not much reason for a speaker. However, if you are using your computer for video or voice calls, gaming, music, or watching movies, getting a desktop speaker can take your entertainment from zero to hero.

Even the best audio effects can sound terrible on a poor sound system. Your computer really does not have much of a sound system at all. Needless to say, most sound effects will therefore be effect-less. One option to improve your entertainment listening quality is to get a high-quality pair of noise-canceling headphones. The other is to get a set of computer speakers. Even if your budget is not equipped for a full surround sound overhaul, low-cost speakers can hugely impact your listening quality.

Types of Speakers for a Gaming Desktop

Stereo Speakers

Stereo speakers are a pretty simple setup with two speakers, one for the right and one for the left of your desktop. Although they will largely improve the quality of the sound, it won’t be surround sound quality.

2.1

This speaker setup includes stereo speakers with a subwoofer. The subwoofer enhances deep bass frequencies below 100Hz. A good subwoofer will enhance explosions, rumbles, and add depth to the bass. This is great for entertainment and gaming but not necessary if you are using your desktop sound mainly for video and voice calls.

Surround Sound

Surround sound usually includes five to seven speakers as well as a subwoofer. This type of sound system is more common with a home entertainment system and most people find the cost and inconvenience of the setup unnecessary for a desktop. Serious gamers who spend a lot of time around the PC may however find it worth the investment.

Bookshelf Speakers

Bookshelf speakers are any speakers small enough to fit on a bookshelf and are usually used as stereo or surround speaker setups. Being small unpowered speakers means they can be frustrating to configure if you haven’t done it before. Being ‘unpowered’ simply means that they require a separate amp to connect to in order to play music through them. Although they are more expensive and space-consuming their powerful and clear sound quality is worth it.

Other Sound Solutions

If you just want to enhance your desktop sound even a portable speaker can do the trick as long as it features a USB connection, Bluetooth connection, or 3.5mm audio input.

Things to Consider When Choosing Computer Speakers

Besides the sound quality and level of oomph you require, you also need to consider the practicality of your setup.

Space

Does your desk, office, or room have the space required for the sound setup that you want to install? Stereo or portable Bluetooth speakers can fit in most tight spaces while a surround sound type setup will require more space.

Connections

Before you buy your speakers, make sure the connections are compatible with the outlets you have available, and most of all, that you have outlets available in the first place. You will most likely require USB or 3.5mm ports. USB ports are preferable for sound quality so if you have a choice, opt for the USB connection. Alternatively, if your desktop supports Bluetooth this is always a winning and versatile option.

Controls

If you are happy to adjust only the volume, go for something simple with an on/off button and volume control. However, some people prefer to have the audio aspects fine-tuned. If that’s you, look for something with individual dials or app compatibility for low, mid, and high-end sound adjustments.

Whatever your needs and budget, there’s a winning audio setup for your home or office desktop that will vastly improve the sound quality.
